Southwest Companion Pass

What is it?

The Southwest Companion Pass is among the best deals in the points and miles world!!!! When you earn the pass, you get to fly someone with you for free (minus taxes and fees starting at $5.60) every time you fly for the rest of the year in which you earn it and all of the following year! We have used it to fly to Hawaii multiple times, San Diego, Denver, Nashville, Florida and more.

How to Earn a Companion Pass

To earn the Southwest Companion Pass, you have two options:

1. Take 100 qualifying one-way flights or

2. Earn 135,000 Rapid Rewards points in one calendar year.

Option 1. Isnt the most ralistic for most people so lets talk about option 2.

The easiest way to get 135,000 points is through credit card welcome offers. The standard welcome offer on the Southwest personal cards is 50,000 points, and 60,000-80,000 points on the business cards. Periodically, the welcome offers on the personal cards will jump up to 60,000+ points! Opening just one of these cards isn’t going to cut it. What you need to do is open two cards.

How my husband and I earned the companion pass:

I opened a personal southwest card 11/6/23, the welcome offer was spend $3,000 in 3 months to receive 75,000 points. I then opened a southwest business card 12/7/23. The welcome offer was spend $5,000 in 3 months and receive 80,000 points. Once I got each card, I referred my husband for the same card. We each made sure to not hit the minimum spend until January of 2024. I hit my spend and received my welcome offer points 1/10/24. My husband hit it soon after so we both had a companion pass for most of 2024 and all of 2025.
